HOG idea on 10 ways to creating effective study space

Whether you have kids that are doing more learning from home, or you're a college or university student that needs a space to work in, setting up a good study space is important. How do you create a space that's conducive to learning? Here's some tips that will help you get started.

1. Set Aside a Space In The Home

Firstly, you're going to need to pick a space in the home that works for you or your child. It's very tempting to just stay on the sofa or the bed when you study, but that's actually counter intuitive. Those are places you relax, and if you're using them for study too, then it actually gets harder to relax there.

Instead, pick a space in the home that's just for study. This can be in your child's bedroom, or a corner of the kitchen, dining room, or living room. Wherever you place the study area, that's just for study.

2. Add In A Good Desk

Now you have the space, you'll need to furnish it. The first thing you'll need is a desk. This is the foundation of the space, so find a desk that fits all your needs. For example, it needs to be big enough to fit everything needed, such as textbooks, iPads, notebooks, pens, and so on. However, it still needs to fit into the space you've chosen, so be careful not to get a desk that's too big.

Also consider exactly how you'll use it. If the desk is for your kids, you may want lots of desks and storage, so look for desks with drawer space. If you're using a desktop computer rather than a laptop, look for a desk with a rolling under desk tray for the keyboard.

3. Invest In A Good Quality Desk Chair

How to make a desk chair more comfortable? 'It's hard to overstate just how important a good desk chair is' says interior design blogger Timothy Underhill, from Elite Assignment Help and OXEssays. 'With the right chair you can be comfortable and maintain good posture as you work.'

Look into ergonomic chairs, ones with lower back support are best for learning. It also should be set up at the right height, to reduce strain. You can get many on hogfurniture.com.ng

4. Don't Forget Storage Needs

As you're setting up your study space, don't forget about any storage that you may need. What you need in your study space varies from person to person, but you want to have space for it all. For example, if the desk is for your kids, there needs to be enough room for all their books.

There's lots of different ways you can include storage. Take advantage of vertical space, by adding in cabinetry or shelves above the desk. Getting a desk with extra drawers, or even custom options like filing cabinets, can help a lot. Adding a tack board in the area will also help keep notes and reminders in place while keeping the area tidy, too.

5. Get The Lighting Right

As you'll be studying in this space, you need to avoid eye strain as much as possible. The right lighting will help with this. Placing your desk in an area with a lot of natural light will help here, as well as adding extra lights to the space. Adding in a good desk lamp will help a lot here.

6. Add Personal Touches

Just because it's your work space, it doesn't mean that you can't have personal touches. You can add anything you like here, to make the space feel more like your own. This can be anything from posters, to family photos, to decorations. Whatever you add in, keep it fairly minimal so you won't get distracted while studying.

7. Use An Ambient Noise Machine

Many students put music on while they study, thinking that it will help. The opposite can be true though, and they find the music distracting. As such, you'll need something else. After all, studying in a silent room is rather stifling. Plus, sometimes you just can't get silence thanks to traffic noise, noise from the rest of the home, and so on.

The solution is to try ambient noise instead. 'It's perfect for drowning out outside noise, and it won't distract you' says writer Gareth Dawes from UKWritings and Revieweal. 'You can get machines that play ambient noise, or just use an app on your phone.'

8. Put Some Plants In The Space

Did you know that NASA studies show having plants in your space improve indoor air quality? As such, having a few in your study space isn't a bad idea. Plus, they make the area feel more welcoming overall. Add a low maintenance plant, like an aloe or spider plant, to make the area more serene.

9. Have A Door Between The Space And The Rest Of The Home

As you're planning out your study space, make sure that there's going to be a door between it and the rest of the home. If you or your child are trying to study in the middle of the action, nothing will ever get done. It's too easy to get distracted and not get work done when you need to.

Have that door, and have the rule that if it's shut, then you're not to be disturbed. It allows to set boundaries around your work, and allows you to get things done without distraction.

10. Keep It For Work Only

Finally, when you have a good space for work, you may find you like it enough that you want to spend more and more time there. As tempting as it is, keep that desk just for work. If you start relaxing there, then it will be harder to get down to work when you need to. As such, don't let all your hard work setting up your study area go to waste.

With these ten tips, you'll be able to create a study area that's perfect for you, and start really getting to grips with your work. It'll be much easier to set aside time to study with your own study area.
